My turn to endo

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

It finally happened: I went over my handlebars on Monday night when I was out riding at dusk. It’s been really hot and dry here in Minnesota, and the trail is brittle. As a result, taking corners or ridges wrong can result in injury….as I found out.

I was crossing a ridge between two uphill S-turns at ~10 MPH (16 kph), and the ridge suddenly gave way, digging in my front wheel and sending me over the handlebars. It was all over in less than a half second. I sat on the ground for 5 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. It was hard to fathom the amount of momentum I actually had to fly like that.

No serious injuries! I just got really dirty and scraped up my left leg/arm a little. Check out the battle scars from my rite of passage.

1st pic: Standing in my bathroom before my cleansing shower. Check out how dirty my left side is.
2nd pic: My feet are really tan, so you can tell that I was pretty damn dirty above my sock line. That actually happens every time, not just when I fall.
3rd pic: I got most of my cuts on the left side above and below my knee. They are still filled with dirt here.
4th pic: Arms got really dirty, but I brushed them off before I got in my car. My forearm was twitching for some reason too.

    Ouchy! That leg looks nasty! It might be time to start walking - there may be snakes, but you die when they bite. They don’t tear you up like that! You should be more careful! lol … So, what are you using for your photo gallery? Looks good. Amy

    You’re lucky to have come off lightly. Last time I came off I fractured both elbows (radial head), which is extremelly painful and renders you pretty dysfunctional for weeks.

    @stephen
    Argh. That sounds painful. I rode the course again for the first time last night and wasn’t gun shy at all. I was, however, slow and winded because I didn’t ride for a week.
