Spokes and rims

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Chris and Shad took me out today for some more freshman hazing, aka mountain biking at their speed. About 1.5 miles into the trail, I found myself hopelessly winded. Oh well…can’t get better unless I push the envelope every day. I must have really been pushing the envelope today cause I broke two spokes on my rear wheel. Arrgh. My last spoke broke just 3 weeks ago.

Spokes breaking have a very distinct sound. I was going ~15 mph when they broke, so I head snap snap click click click click click. The clicks being once per tire revolution were a dead giveaway as to the tragedy that had just occured. *sigh*.

I took my bike to Erik’s right away as to hopefully get in line and have it back by the end of the week. When the tech saw that I had broken spokes on the same wheel just three weeks before, he rolled his eyes and sighed, “again?” In an effort to prevent future visits to the spoke fairy, I heeded the advice of the tech and purchased a new rim for the back wheel. Hopefully, this rim will last more than the 100 miles that the other rim lasted.

To top off that trip, my crappy 1986′ Ford started having transmission problems. Oh great…I’m 5 miles from home, bikeless, and I have to get back to work. Add on top of that rage from being hungry, and I was one unhappy camper.

Bethany and I had a relaxing evening, as we always try to after high-tension days at work. While eating pizza around the fountains at the Heart of the City park, we realized that we had some interesting options for cars to replace my ford. Read Bethany’s blog for details ;)
