Macintosh: Crash different

Sunday, May 1st, 2005

I thought I’d go rollerblading around Nokomis today, but the weather outside is just grim and wet. Oh well. Later on this afternoon, I’m finally picking up the keys to my new apartment in Burnsville. Woot!

So, on Friday, I met Bethany at the Mall of America after work. We like to meet there since she works downtown, and I work in the south suburbs, just across the river. Anyway, upon arrival, I saw a huge line in front of the Mac Store. Normally, you see a bunch of geeky guys standing around in their black uniforms talking to each other because there is nobody in the store. Today was definitely the exception. I remembered back to Thursday when I read the news about Mac OSX Tiger being released. I thought to myself, “big deal…that’s like releasing a serivice pack for windows.”.

After a couple hours of shopping with Bethany, we went back to the store and actually went inside. It turns out that the line was because they were giving away scratch-off cards at the door. We took ours. I got a free song from Itunes (*hand job motion*), but Bethany actually won a $70 piece of software. When we went to claim her prize, we were joined by other winners, many whom had won IPods and IPod minis. Crazy.

I’m not sure how I feel about Macs anymore. Before, when the alternative was Windows 98 or some cryptic Linux distro, things were way different. But…since 2001. That’s right…no BSOD’s since 2001, Windows XP has been sufficient. At the Mac store, I saw all of my favorite games….from 3 years ago  . Clearly, Apple needs to bribe some game companies to develop more cross-platform games. OpenGL has helped this initiative, but it still comes down to writing portable code. Don’t get me started on big-endian network programming……

Usually, when I sit down at a mac, I go to the applications and just open up a console window. After all, it is just a Window manager on top of BSD. Why not just install KDE or GNOME on top of NetBSD or FreeBSD?

Not sure where this is going, but I’m getting hungry, and my water is boiling on the stove. God bless!
